Alan Whipple Profile Picture

I am Alan Whipple, the Web Developer from Albany, NY.

I am a Web Software Developer specializing in the language/technology involved with creating successful websites. My motivation and attention to detail help me resolve issues and launch complex integrations. I have a range of technical skills as well as a degree in Communications. I am a huge supporter of self improvement (mentally, emotionally, and physically).

I am currently employed by the Hearst Corporation (Newspaper Division). I work with a geographically distributed development team following Agile/Scrum principles. We are developing centralized web platforms for all Hearst news websites.

I work at the Times Union building in Colonie, NY. The Times Union is the daily newspaper for the “Capital Region” (Albany and surrounding counties). The Times Union is owned by the Hearst Corporation, and is one of the properties now using the central CMS.

Some of my web development related skills include:
PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, Ajax, XML, XHTML, CSS, UX, Linux, Apache, SVN, WordPress, jQuery, MediaWiki, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash, SEO, Networking, DNS, Akamai, Solr, Microsoft Excel, Agile/Scrum development, character encoding, and much more!

I am the Alan Whipple who attended the following schools:

  • Altamont Elementary
  • Farnsworth Middle School
  • Guilderland High School
  • SUNY Cortland
  • SUNY IT (in Utica)

I held a part-time position at SUNYIT maintaining the residential (dorm) network and helping students resolve network/internet issues.

I graduated from SUNY IT as a Bachelor of Science with a major in ‘Professional & Technical Communication’ and a minor in Computer Science. I am rather disappointed with our education system. My web design/development skills are almost entirely self-taught.

You can achieve a lot when you self-educate with determination:

According to Carl Jung / Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality tests I am INTJ (Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging).

I have a strong desire to continually improve myself, my projects, and the world. If I ever have the chance to work for Google, I’m taking it.

Alan, nice site. I didn’t realize you were the web developer from Albany. It’s good to meet you. I’m the government employee from Washington, DC. Also an INTJ (which I think a lot of guys like us are.) Good luck with the blog. I’m going to stick around and read a bit…
